Halloween Handfasting

One of the first things Teresa and I had in common was a love of cats and of the musical Cats. So, on Halloween of 2001, we got married in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, under an oak tree at Boiling Springs Community Park, dressed as cats. A notary signed the marriage license before we drove to the park, and Teresa’s best friend Karen MacKenzie “officiated” as we said our vows to each other under a full moon.

During the ceremony, the cops showed up to ask us what we were doing, since we didn’t have a permit or anything like that. Karen explained that we were getting married, and the cops left us alone. Since then, the family joke has been that it isn’t a good wedding unless the cops show up.
